Can wrought iron be welded?
With any good low-carbon steel rod, we can weld wrought iron without using flux (such as OXWELD No. 1 H.T.). The iron component, which is nearly carbon-free, melts at a higher temperature than carbon steel, whereas the slag component melts at a much lower temperature. The slag will melt first, giving the welding a greasy appearance. In most base metals, this greasy appearance indicates that the metal is ready for fusion with the filler metal, but this is not the case with wrought iron. Before the metal begins to melt, significantly more heat must be applied.
Welding wrought iron requires a high level of skill and experience as it is difficult to control the heat input, which can result in damage.
Who should I call for a wrought iron repair service?
Tucson AZ Welder can weld wrought iron without the use of flux using any good low-carbon steel rod (such as OXWELD No. 1 H.T.). The iron component, which is nearly carbon-free, melts at a higher temperature than carbon steel, whereas the slag component melts at a much lower temperature.
For this reason, the rod must be continually removed from and inserted into the weld puddle. The slag is drawn to one side of the lot or both sides by a so-called "spoon" (iron ingot with holes drilled in it). When welding wrought iron it requires great skill.
Iron railings, gates, fences, balcony railings, stairways, iron balustrades, fountains, sculptures, and other ornamental wrought iron fabrication services can all be restored and repaired by our skilled wrought iron repair and restoration professionals. Call us today for a free estimate!
